Your Senior Graduated…Now What?
Graduation season is hectic, thrilling, and nerve-wracking, but the time has arrived! So, once that cap and gown have been packed up, the diplomas framed, and celebrations enjoyed…what comes next? As a parent or loved one, knowing how to support your new graduate during this pivotal transition can be challenging. Encouraging them in their strengths, checking in with them, and listening to their concerns will make this season of their lives smooth and exciting instead of stressful.
Help them set realistic goals: Post-graduation life can feel overwhelming with the sudden influx of decisions and responsibilities. Help your graduate set realistic short-term and long-term goals, whether it's applying for jobs, considering further education, or taking time to travel and explore. Breaking these goals into manageable steps can make the process feel less daunting and more structured. Additionally, financial guidance is crucial. Offer advice on budgeting, saving, and understanding credit. Helping them create a budget that balances their income and expenses can be invaluable. Consider gifting a session with a financial advisor to equip your graduate with the knowledge to make sound financial decisions. It’s okay if they accomplish this in small, bite-sized pieces, so their goals can be things like, “Open my own savings or investment account”, or “write out a budget for groceries”.
Encourage your grad to network: Networking can open doors to new opportunities and career advancement, so encourage your graduate to connect with alumni, attend industry events, and utilize platforms like LinkedIn. Networking is not just about finding a job but also about gaining insights and building relationships that can be beneficial in the long run. Introducing them to your own network, if relevant, or suggesting local networking events and professional groups can also be very helpful. Encourage your graduate to continue developing their skills and knowledge through online courses, certifications, workshops, or even hobbies that enhance their personal and professional growth. A subscription to a learning platform like Coursera or Udemy can be a thoughtful and practical graduation gift.
Help them grow independence: As tempting as it might be to guide every step, it's important to foster your graduate's independence. Allow them to make their own decisions and learn from their experiences, offering advice when asked but giving them space to grow and adapt to their new adult life. Encourage them to handle everyday responsibilities like setting up utilities, paying bills, and scheduling appointments. These tasks are what they need to develop self-sufficiency and confidence. It’s also really important to speak positively of whatever path your senior has chosen, whether it’s a trade school, an university, a community college, or entering the workforce, so that they know you have their back!
Begin planning ahead if your grad has siblings: If you have another student nearing graduation, it's never too early to start planning. Booking early for events, accommodations, and travel can save stress and money. Graduation season is a busy time, and early preparation ensures that you can celebrate without last-minute hassles. Booking travel and accommodation early, ordering graduation supplies in advance, and planning celebration details well ahead of time can make the experience smoother and more enjoyable. Supporting your graduate through this transition is about balancing guidance with independence, providing the right mix of encouragement, practical advice, and room for growth to help them step confidently into their future.
